Impostor

Bring your friends. Find the impostor.

One question for the group. Another for the impostor. Everyone answers on their own iPhone or iPad, then compares responses to work out who understood something different. Play face to face, on the same Wi-Fi network.

Branding

A colour for mystery. A clear interface for play.

The icon places a hooded character in front of the surrounding group. The contrast between the concealed figure and the other people expresses the search at the centre of each round. Purple connects this identity to primary actions, highlighted names and the presentation artwork.

Inside the app, light or dark system backgrounds and native controls give questions and answers the main role. The App Store compositions use the same purple, white headlines and actual interface captures. Their sequence explains the experience: receive your question, compare answers, vote and discover the difference.

The brief

The same answer can hide a different question.

Impostor is a Dorobanti Media product for groups playing together in the same room. A difference between two questions starts the conversation: an answer can look plausible at first, while its explanation raises suspicion. Even the person receiving the different question is not explicitly told that they are the impostor.

Each participant uses their own device. It keeps their question private and records their answer and vote, while discussion takes place aloud. The Host manages the pace and remains a regular player. There are no answer or voting timers automatically pushing the group forward.

How it works

How suspicion starts and how the result is decided.

Everyone uses their own iPhone or iPad. Connect all devices to the same Wi-Fi network and stay nearby for the discussion.

  1. One person creates the game.

The Host chooses the topic and round count: 1–5 in Free or 1–20 with Impostor+, initially set to 5. Everyone else finds the Host by name and joins before the first round. The topic and round count stay fixed for the session. There are no room codes to enter.

  2. Answer your private question.

Most players receive the group question; exactly one receives a different question. Nobody sees a label announcing their role. Each person submits a short answer of 1–40 characters. Once accepted, the answer cannot be changed.

  3. Compare the answers and discuss.

After everyone answers, the Host reveals the group question and every named response. Compare meanings and explanations, not just values. The impostor’s identity and the second question remain hidden. The Host decides when discussion is complete and starts voting.

  4. Each player votes for someone else.

You cannot vote for yourself or change a submitted vote. Other people cannot see your choice or the vote totals before the result. Progress shows only how many votes have been submitted. The Host can reveal results once every active player has voted.

  5. Find out whether the impostor was caught.

The impostor is caught only by receiving strictly more votes than every other player. Each non-impostor then receives 1 point and the impostor receives 0. If the impostor escapes, including through a tie for the most votes, they receive 2 points and everyone else receives 0.

  6. See the difference and continue.

Results show the impostor, both questions, answers, vote totals and point awards. The Host starts the next round. After the final round, everyone can open the final ranking. Points accumulate only in the current game; starting another game creates a fresh session.

In detail

Related questions. Different explanations.

576 pairs across 10 topics

The Romanian topics cover general questions, friends, relationships, childhood, work, family, online life, nights out, unpopular opinions and Fără filtru. The last category contains adult content and carries an 18+ product warning.

A difference within the same kind of answer

For example, choosing where to meet and splitting the bill can both take a number of minutes. When both questions appear at the end, the group can see where the misunderstanding began. All playable prompts are in Romanian.

The Host plays alongside everyone else

The Host also answers, votes and earns points, and can be assigned the impostor role. Organising the game does not reveal the impostor’s identity, the other question or individual votes early.

The challenge

The same round across several screens.

The game depends on revealing information at the right moment. Everyone needs their own question, then the group’s answers, and the impostor’s identity only at the end. The Host controls the pace and coordinates the session while playing within the same visibility boundaries.

Local connections and purchases introduce further cases. An accepted answer must survive an interruption, while the Host’s subscription should enable the chosen game without requiring every guest to buy access. We separated those responsibilities from voting and scoring rules.

For Impostor, we built our own product around individual screens and a shared conversation. Its purple identity, Romanian questions and native app come together in a local deduction game. The work connects interface design with synchronised rounds, private information and access controlled through the Host’s optional subscription.

Visibility defined for each stage

Each player’s interface receives only the information allowed at the current stage, separately from the complete game state. The Host uses the same restricted presentation, so organising the session does not become a gameplay advantage.

Keep the pace with the people playing

The Host explicitly starts reveals, voting and results. Progress shows how many answers or votes have arrived without exposing their contents early. No gameplay timer takes over the conversation.

Content that supports deduction

Question pairs describe different situations while inviting comparable answer forms or units. The Romanian collection, hooded character and screenshot sequence explain the same premise: someone answered something different.

The build

One shared game, the right information for each person.

The Host’s device coordinates the game state, while each player’s interface receives only the information allowed at the current stage. During answering, that includes the player’s own question; after the reveal, the group question and responses; at results, both questions and the impostor’s identity. The Host’s interface follows the same visibility boundaries.

We separated rules and scoring from the SwiftUI interface, local networking and subscription verification. If a player temporarily loses their connection, an accepted answer remains part of the game. Others can wait for reconnection; removing a participant during an active round cancels that attempt. The change is handled explicitly instead of silently scoring a round with a different group.

The result

Rules, connection and identity in one product.

The implemented app covers creating and discovering local games, private questions, voting, scoring and the final leaderboard. Free includes 75 question pairs and every gameplay stage; Impostor+ expands the Host’s topics and options. The presentation set shows these steps in the actual interface and explicitly identifies its subscription-game examples.

Good to know

Access, devices and data.

Free or Impostor+

Free includes three people, all 75 De toate pairs and up to 5 rounds. The optional weekly Impostor+ subscription gives the Host all topics, larger groups and up to 20 rounds. Only the Host needs the subscription; the current offer and price are displayed through the App Store.

A local connection

Requires iOS/iPadOS 26.6 or later. The free game can work without internet, but all devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Loading offers, purchasing and restoring a subscription may require internet access.

No accounts or persistent game history

Names, answers and votes travel between participating devices. The game has no developer gameplay backend, advertising or accounts. Sessions and scores stay in memory; Apple handles purchases.

A few useful answers.

Can we play remotely?

Impostor is for nearby players on the same Wi-Fi network. There are no public rooms or internet multiplayer. Everyone uses their own iPhone or iPad, and discussion takes place face to face.

Does everyone need Impostor+?

No. Only the Host needs the subscription to create a game with Impostor+ benefits. The other participants do not purchase access for that session. Free already includes all gameplay stages, voting and scoring.

Who wins when the votes are tied?

The impostor is caught only when they alone have the most votes. A tie involving the impostor means they escape and receive 2 points. If caught, each of the other players receives 1 point.
