Start a game

How to create and join a game

1. 01Connect every device to the same Wi-Fi network and allow Local Network access when the app requests it.
2. 02The Host selects “Create game” and enters only a name. The session appears automatically in the other players’ list. In the Lobby, the Host can change Category and Number of rounds before the first Start; guests see those settings read-only.
3. 03On each joining device, select “Join a game”, enter a name, and choose the Host under “Games found on Wi-Fi”.
4. 04Wait until everyone appears connected in the Lobby before the Host starts the first round.

Basic requirements

Every participant uses their own device. The session limit appears in the app.

1. 01Use an iPhone with iOS 26.6 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26.6 or later. Settings and support lets you save Appearance (System, Light or Dark) and Language (System, Romanian or English) independently. System is the default; names and answers you write stay unchanged. The app uses portrait orientation on both iPhone and iPad.
2. 02Use the same current version of the app on every device.
3. 03Connect the devices to the same local network and keep Impostor in the foreground while connecting.
4. 04Allow Local Network access on each device. Device pairing is not required.

Do we need Internet access?

You need the same local Wi-Fi network, but gameplay uses the questions bundled in the app and does not need Internet access.

Loading the Impostor + offer, purchasing, restoring, and managing the subscription may require a connection to the App Store.

Wi-Fi and the local network

Turning Wi-Fi on is not enough: devices must share a local network that allows them to connect to each other.

The Host does not appear

1. 01Check that every device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network and has Local Network access enabled.
2. 02The Host must have created a game. Keep that session open and the apps in the foreground.
3. 03Check that everyone uses the same current version of the app, then retry discovery from “Join a game”.
4. 04Guest networks may isolate devices. Local discovery filters, VPN routing, or hotspot restrictions can prevent the Host from appearing. Try a trusted network that permits connections between devices.

Local Network access is denied

1. 01Use “Open Settings” in the app’s message.
2. 02Enable Local Network access for Impostor in the device settings.
3. 03Return to Impostor and retry. Check the permission on the other devices too if the Host still does not appear.

Connection waits or fails

1. 01Keep the Host session open and both apps in the foreground, on the same Wi-Fi network.
2. 02Check whether the game has already started or reached its player limit. New players can join only before the first round.
3. 03Use “Retry” or “Retry with the same Host”, depending on the screen. Do not create a second player for the same session.
4. 04If the Host ended the game or removed you, leave the old session. The Host can create a new game.

During a game

A player appears disconnected

After an established connection drops, the app makes an automatic reconnect attempt. Keep the Host session active, reconnect to the same Wi-Fi network, and return to Impostor on the player’s device. Returning to the foreground can retry the connection.

If recovery fails, use “Retry” in the in-game message. You can also select “Leave game”. Do not join again under a new name.

An accepted answer or vote stays valid. Missing input blocks progress until the player reconnects or the Host removes them. Recovery is not guaranteed, and terminating the app process loses its in-memory state.

The Host removes a player

If the Host removes a player during an active round, the current attempt is cancelled. Completed rounds and their points remain unchanged.

The Host leaves the game

If the Host ends or permanently leaves the game, the session ends for everyone. The Host role does not move to another device. Return Home and create a new session.

An answer cannot be submitted

Write an answer of up to 40 characters. An answer made only of spaces cannot be sent. You can submit one answer per round; once accepted, it cannot be edited.

A vote cannot be submitted

Choose another active player. You cannot vote for yourself and can submit only one vote per round; an accepted vote cannot be changed.

Impostor + and the subscription

Restore Impostor +

On the Host device, open Impostor + and choose “Restore purchases”. Access returns only if Apple verifies an active subscription for the App Store account in use.

When the app starts without active Plus, close the weekly offer with the top-right X to play free. The Home card reopens Impostor +; active members can Manage subscription in Apple’s native sheet. The top-left gear opens “Settings and support”; the top-right ? opens the rules.

Manage or stop renewal

Manage or stop renewal from the Apple account used for purchase. Impostor does not require a separate account.

In Romania, the weekly plan may include 3 free days only when Apple confirms eligibility and displays the offer; the yearly plan has no free trial. After the trial, Apple’s displayed weekly price applies. To avoid the first paid renewal, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

Why does only the Host need Impostor +?

Joining players use the access available to the Host-created session. If the Host has Impostor +, everyone else can play that category, round count, and setup without subscriptions of their own.

Content

What does Unfiltered · 18+ mean?

The category covers sexual and other adult themes in a direct but non-graphic tone. The marker warns about adult content; it does not verify participants’ ages.
